Reducing Citron’s CO2 Footprint Through Electrification of Their Fleet

Building Healthy Spaces, Inside and Out

Citron Hygiene’s strapline is building healthy spaces, and this doesn’t just mean within indoor facilities. We are passionate about building healthy spaces in the places people live, work and play and part of this is making sure the environment we live in is healthy and hygienic.

CO2 emissions are a significant contributor to the global warming crisis the world is facing. Through our daily habits and the use of petrol and diesel vehicles, the level of CO2 emissions in the air can build up like a blanket in the air, leading to increased air temperatures and a progressive warming up of the air. The impact of global warming can be disastrous and detrimental to the environment and our own health. From climate change to lack of food and water supplies which in turn leads to poverty, there are a myriad of issues and if, collectively we do not take action, the crisis will be bigger than we may be able to deal with.

This is why Citron Hygiene are taking conscious steps to be environmentally responsible and in turn, helping our customers to achieve the same. One of the ways we are doing this is by reducing our CO2 footprint by having electric vehicles play a dominant role in our transportation policy. We are working with Electric Vehicle Ecosystem Limited (EVE), a specialist Electric Vehicle Consultancy to electrify our fleet in three stages.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Citron to accelerate their transition to clean vehicles and clean mobility and simply to ‘simplify the electrification’ – Dominic Trotman Director and Founder of Electric Vehicle Ecosystem Ltd.

Working with EVE to Electrify Citron’s Vehicles Efficiently and Effectively

The simplification of electrification. In other words, electrification made easy. This is what EVE want to do for companies and this is why Citron Hygiene approached them to help.

As with all our operations and services, Citron Hygiene wanted to make sure the electrification of the fleet of vehicles was conducted in the right way, following a three-stage process:

  • Phase 1 – Transitioning employees to Electric Vehicles and installation of charging infrastructure at Citron Hygiene sites with a financial support package available for employees’ home charging needs.
  • Phase 2 – Transitioning fossil fuel ‘service vehicles’ including our vans and trucks to electric.
  • Phase 3 – Utilising rapid innovation and technology developments in areas such as wind and solar energy to ultimately power our EV fleets of cars and vans at the Citron sites.

We are excited to announce that Phase 1 is currently underway, and Phase 2 is in its trial periods, and the positive impact of this initiative is already evident in the data and employees are happy with the change too.

Steve Nurdin, Marketing Director at Citron Hygiene comments,

“Having a role with Citron that demands a fair amount of car travel, and being a bit of a ‘petrol head’, when Citron approached me about potentially switching to a full Electric Vehicle (EV), I must say I did have a few initial reservations. I live in quite a rural setting so range anxiety was quite high on the list.

But, once you get into the pros and cons of EV ownership, and the obvious environmental benefits to switching, the suggestion became more and more attractive. Making the switch is very simple; there’s easy access to grants for electric charging point installation, and there are more and more charging points being installed nationally every day, so having taken the plunge a few months ago, it’s difficult to see how I would ever want to switch back.

Citron Hygiene is investing a lot of time and money into ensuring our impact on the environment is minimal and being part of this transition is exciting. The next phase is obviously our commercial fleet, and I can’t wait to help support this and drive the change through our company. Our customers demand more from us these days and it is refreshing to work for a company that is so committed to doing what is right – not just what is most profitable.”

Impact of Policy and Contribution to Reduction of CO2 Emissions

While Citron Hygiene are only in Phase 1 of the initiative, using the metric CO2e, it is estimated from the vehicles that have been fully electrified, we have seen a 67.8% reduction in Citron’s carbon footprint.

CO2e accounts for carbon dioxide in addition to other gases such as methane, nitrous oxide and others, all of which can have a negative impact on the environment.

Citron Hygiene can’t wait to continue with the electrification of our fleet in future, working in close partnership with EVE to ensure we do this safely and operationally. We are looking forward to seeing the data on how much more our carbon footprint could be reduced by.
